Dear Madam President,
Congratulations on becoming the first Jewish woman elected to the Presidency of Mexico!
The child of a Lithuanian-Ashkenazi father and a [Holocaust-escaping] Bulgarian-Sephardi mother, ascending to the leadership of her new country is awesome to behold. According to media reports, you describe your parents as “atheists” and your relationship with Judaism as “cultural.” I see you as my Jewish sister, and I’d to offer a few family insights as you begin leading the world’s twelfth largest economy:
1. The world will always see you as a JEW. Wear it with pride; like it or not, you are a high-profile ambassador of the Jewish people and of your ancestors in heaven.
2. As Jews, we believe in the Divinity of the Torah. Your country is largely Catholic, so your constituents – among the world’s 1.5 billion Catholics – overwhelmingly accept that too. The world’s 1 billion Protestants agree. As do the world’s 2 billion Muslims. The Torah tells us that G-d gave the Land of Israel to Abraham and Sarah’s descendants – the Jewish people – as “an eternal inheritance (Genesis 16:8).” Ergo, more than half the world’s population believe that G-d gave Israel to the Jews. (I assume that this is the position of your faithful Catholic constituents.) While we were eventually colonized and expelled, Jews everywhere – even in Lithuania and Bulgaria – always kept their minds and hearts focused on Israel as our eternal legacy. The Torah predicts our eventual loss of occupancy, but never its ownership. That critical distinction tells us that Eretz Yisrael (the eternal Land of Israel) is, and always will be, ours. This comes from G-d, not Lord Balfour or the UN, as much as we welcome their assent. In 1948, Jews liberated parts of Eretz Yisrael and formed a modern State of Israel which is, thank G-d, a haven for Jews. But let’s not allow that relatively recent phenomenon to distract us from its crucial context: The millennia-old – historically acknowledged – reality that the LAND OF ISRAEL is our eternal inheritance.
3. Jihadis, inspired by the Muslim Brotherhood, are waging a war on Jews and against Western Civilization. They want us both dead. (The situation in Israel is a relative sideshow.) These bigots cynically manipulate Jewish sympathy for the war’s civilian casualties into cover for their Jew-hatred. Please don’t let them use you. If you have concerns about Israeli policy, please express them directly to Israel’s government.
You are now a Jewish Head-of-State. Stand strong and protect world peace, by protecting Jews – and Israel – from those who want us all dead.
May the name Claudia Sheinbaum go down in history as someone who successfully stood up against the radical mob.
